Technical Communicators Association of Japan

We want to help those of you struggling daily with creating product and support information that “just doesn't get through!”
◎Technical communication is the specialized field of expressing product and support information that must be conveyed in a technically accurate manner that is understandable to the reader, and delivering it to those who need it.
◎Technical communicators transform diverse product and support information into tangible forms relevant to real-world applications.
◎The role of the Technical Communicators Association (JTCA) is to support technical communicators in their professional activities and to facilitate comfortable communication between users/customers and the information and support they need about products and services.

Technical Communication and Technical Communicators

Technical communication refers to the technology of efficiently creating documents and information as digital data and effectively utilizing them. It is systematized as the technology of combining text with non-textual elements such as diagrams and videos to complete documents and information. It is applied to the creation and quality evaluation of technical documents, corporate external communications, operational procedures, and user support information (FAQs). In Europe and the United States, specialized universities and departments exist for this field, which is a technical discipline where doctoral degrees are awarded.

Professionals who utilize technical communication technology to create documents and information and manage their quality are called technical communicators. This role often involves adjacent technical areas such as usability and user experience design, risk assessment, and process design. It requires skills that fuse the engineering aspects of information architecture with the communication studies perspective.

Recommendation

Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry
Commerce and Information Policy Bureau
Cultural and Information-Related Industries Division

In today's world, clear explanations are essential for effectively utilizing the increasingly diverse and sophisticated array of products and services available. Furthermore, both businesses and government/local authorities are seeing widespread adoption of networked information systems. To enhance work efficiency and improve the convenience of daily life, there is a growing expectation for greater clarity in written explanations. Since its establishment in 1992, the Technical Communicators Association has pursued multifaceted activities. We are delighted that it has achieved incorporation to progressively carry forward these endeavors.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has also implemented various measures, such as expert study groups and proposals for improvement, aiming to enhance the quality of information handling. In collaboration with the Technical Communicators Association, we have conducted research studies on topics such as manual evaluation guidelines and human resource development. In 2008, at the IT and Electronics Comprehensive Exhibition “CEATEC JAPAN,” the Association exhibited at the “Life Content Frontier” booth, which was planned as part of our ministry's initiatives. As we face an aging society, we intend to continue collaborating with the Technical Communicators Association in various fields. Their research, development, and dissemination of easy-to-understand user information is vital for realizing safe, secure, and comfortable lives through the use of IT and content.
We hope that even more stakeholders will join the Technical Communicators Association, a general incorporated foundation, to become a driving force for realizing clearer information communication technologies.
